I write about artistic process and the people who show up for it.

Most writing about the performing arts is about finished work. Openings, reviews, seasons, closings. I am more interested in what happens before that. The rehearsal room, the workshop, the draft that isn’t working yet, and the question of who gets to be there while it’s happening.

Some of what I write here comes from 20+ years in this field. I founded the Capital Fringe Festival. I have run development offices, built events, and raised money for buildings, programs and artists. I currently serve as Director of Development at The National Theatre Foundation in Washington, DC. In 2016 I wrote a book about fundraising called The Simple Arts of Fundraising.

I also write about athletes and artists, which is less of a detour than it sounds. It is the same question in different clothes: what happens when people get to see the part they usually don’t?

The rest comes from questions I do not have answers to yet. That is most of the reason I write any of it down.

Everything here is mine alone and does not represent the views of my employer or any organization I am affiliated with.
